Private Practice Consultation
Ready to take your career to the next level?
You feel confident working with your clients - but what about running a successful business?
If your graduate program was anything like mine, you learned skills that made you a thoughtful clinician - but very little about running a practice. Many programs assume that their graduates will stay in community mental health agencies, non-profits, or group practices forever. While this can be a fulfilling path for some, for others running your own practice is a better fit. Are you ready to move into private practice and see what it has to offer?
Running a practice isn’t as hard as some make it out to be
Yes, running your own practice requires hard work and involves risks. However, if it were impossible, no one would do it.
Luckily, you don’t have to do it on your own. Consulting with someone who has successfully made the move to private practice can help you identify if private practice is for you given your goals, recognize and mitigate roadblocks, and develop a plan of action.
What are you ready to explore?
- Identify your career goals and discuss if private practice could be a good fit at this time for you given your goals, skills, limitations, financial situation, etc.
- Identify what steps you will need to take to get set up for business in Colorado
- Discuss what business strategies help set you up for long-term success
- Determine who your ideal client is, and develop successful localized marketing and branding strategies to attract that clientele
- Learn how to write your bio, website, and social media content in a way that actually appeals to your ideal clients
- Decide whether or not you would like to take insurance, and learning more about how to get paneled/credentialed with insurance companies

The freedom to deliver care in a way that feels sustainable for me. For me, this means getting to set my caseload, set up my own benefits and PTO which fit my goals, and to be able to work with clients who are a great fit for me. It was also important to me to work for a company that reflects my values. When you build a business yourself, your values are built into every decision you make.
I didn’t want to waste any more time hoping that my next employer would provide these things for me. Instead, I decided to invest in myself and my clients.

I think it’s important to explore why you want this and what you see as the barriers preventing you from taking this step.
It is possible that after some exploration you discover that private practice isn’t a good fit. Some people are happier being part of a system or not holding the responsibility, and that’s ok!
However, I hear so many clinicians talk themselves out of it before even truly considering it - largely because of myths. One of the best things about consultation is the ability to put those fears out there, and get a realistic response back - before you invest your time, money, and energy in building a practic -
Please keep in mind that I am a small business owner and clinician. I am not a lawyer or an accountant. When it comes to these finer points, I am happy to tell you how I’ve handled these issues for perspective - but I recommend that you seek the opinion of people in these fields as these aren’t my areas of specialty.
